Gisele Bundchun, Kate Moss, Mario Testino, The Museum of Fine Arts

I had the luxury of attending the opening reception for Mario Testino’s two exhibits at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.  The fashion photographer’s exhibit is his first in the U.S. and includes iconic images from his 30+ year career.  The work is displayed mostly in large, colorful prints whose enormity increases the shock and excitement value for the viewer.  I, for one, gasped in awe upon entering the space.   Not only was the work striking, but it was displayed on the most incredible shade of blue/green.

Often we see color photography displayed on a white or grey wall but this stunning hue accented Testino’s dramatic images perfectly.  The rich shade of blue/green created a soft environment, that helps the viewer feel a more personal connection with the work;  a connection that might otherwise be lost when we are presented with perfect, long legs and smooth rear ends of models like Gisele Bundchen and Kate Moss.

Framed by chunky, decorative molding, the wall color stood out as a work of art itself while managing to play along with the photographs and not compete.  I strongly suggest stopping by the Museum of Fine Art to view the exhibit while it is in town.
