Who knew arriving to a yoga class 30 minutes early would work out so well?  Having a few minutes to myself, I hopped downstairs to a relatively new home decor shop here in Newport, Venetucci Home.  I walked in and noticed the various shades of blue throughout the shop.  Linen slip covered furniture happens to be a look I am in love with so I just about fell over when I saw chairs covered in this bright azure blue linen, .

There were beautiful textiles and accessories with hints of blue throughout.  The nautical pieces mixed in with traditional styling, put this local shop high on my like list.  A navy accent wall with gold framed paintings was the icing on the cake.

Thankfully, I am in the market for a new dining room table and chairs.  I think that is reason enough to return to Venetucci Home and skip yoga!

Caitlin Wilson Textiles, coral and grey, headboard, pillows, wing chair

Being a girl who loves color, I wonder sometimes why I am so attracted to grey.  The thing is, grey is a great companion color.  Think of it as yellow’s sidekick or in today’s case, coral’s wing-man.  It is a great color to showcase art, fabrics and accessories.  Grey and coral can create a soft palette that can flow throughout your home.

Grey can go in the direction of green or blue.  The challenge is finding the shade that is less sad and putty looking and more soft, reminiscent of a cool fog or ocean mist.  When you find it, pair with coral, pink or even tangerine and you have added the wow factor to your reading nook, bedroom, or any place in your home that needs a little refreshing!

Caitlin Wilson Textiles, Fabric by the Yard, fabrics, pillows

It was love at first sight when I laid my eyes on the patterns of Caitlin Wilson Textiles. This collection of bold prints in bright colors is what I like to call smile inducing. And while it feels modern and bright and fun, it would be equally at home in a private mansion on Bellevue Avenue.

Perhaps my favorite thing about Wilson’s designs are the colors. The combination of pink and orange, pink and aqua, and navy and pink along with the greys, greens, yellows, and more work just as well on their own as they do layered on top of each other which is really great because it means I don’t I have to go in one direction with her patterns (although I must say I’m really partial to the Fleur Chinoise pattern).

Wilson’s designs are currently available as pillows in the very reasonable price range of about $50-$75 and fabrics are $50 per yard. While I love the pillows, the headboard and bench seat pictured certainly exhibit that these fabrics are amazingly fabulous as upholstery.

Fabulous style at fabulous prices–it doesn’t get much better than that!

Color inspiration isn’t always found in art or home decor.  Sometimes it’s as simple as a piece of fruit.  I use avocado often and if you enjoy them like I do you know how beautiful the perfectly ripe avocado can be.

After being inspired by my lunch I thought about the small accents in my home and how to bring these colors in.  Pillows and accessories are the answer and thisnext.com has something for everyone and for all color pallets.

2011 Pantone Color of the Year: Honeysuckle

I have to admit that when I first heard that Pantone chose Honeysuckle as its Color of the Year, I envisioned something in a yellow tone. In my neck of the woods, the incredibly fragrant bushes and hedgerows of honeysuckle bloom in white with a yellow center. But they were indeed talking about the even more lovely variety of pink honeysuckle, and there are few colors I love more than pink (and I don’t mean that in an I feel pretty, I’m a girly-girl kind of way).

This pink is not a soft pastel pink, but a bold, powerful statement pink which is just the way I like my pinks. You’d be hard pressed to find a ballet pink in my house. The bolder the better in my opinion. Pantone says, “Energizing honeysuckle lifts spirits and imparts confidence to meet life’s ongoing challenges.” This is MY color, and I don’t think there could be a better year for it as I feel like all signs are pointing to GO this year and I’m ready to meet every new challenge and opportunity.

Of course, if you live with any males, it’s not always easy to find an acceptable spot in your house for pink, but if you can, I say go for it. Great spots are a dressing room, sitting area, powder room, office or even the inside of a closet (if you really have to hide it and HAVE to have it) or the back of cabinets with glass doors.

Of course, you can always be really bold like the folks who have this kitchen. High gloss bright pink cabinets are sure to put a smile on your face every day.

If you can’t quite make the commitment to such a bold color as a wall color, there are plenty of other ways to incorporate it without having it be the focal point in a room. One easy way is with fabrics like the above Balinese Batik by China Seas. I want a chair or bench in this.

Another one of my just discovered favorites is Jackie Von Tobel’s prints which include the above Circle Trellis in Candy.

Von Tobel’s Paisley Pillow would also be a lovely addition and add a punch of honeysuckle.

And of course, I can’t leave out my favorite lacquer trays by Jonathan Adler. Put this on an ottoman or bar cart and you’re sure to attract the attention you’re looking for. It’s going to be a very (good) pink year!

Etsy Pick of the Week: Recycled T-Shirt Pillows & Rugs

I must admit that I am slightly torn about this item. On the one hand I find these Recycled T-Shirt Pillows very fun visually, and I think the designers at Talking Squid have a great eye for color like in the rug shown below. Plus, it’s not often you find a pillow in a sphere shape. On the other hand, the only info they give on the material is that it’s recycled t-shirts which does not sound like an appealing thing to put in my home. Based on the fact that they have so much of the same material, it is clear that these t-shirts have not been worn and they are probably either buying overstocks or just straight out remnant t-shirt material.

I really wish they provided a little more info on their Etsy page, but in the end I am a huge fan of re-using or finding new uses for materials and I think they add a splash of fun and color to a room. Plus, they’d make pillow fights more like dodgeball which sounds like fun!

New York Gift Show Roundup: John Robshaw

John Robshaw’s beautiful Indian inspired linens and pillows were lovely as always at the New York International Gift Fair. And while I’m a big fan of his bedding, my favorite items in the booth were his floor pillows.

These oversized pillows are a great alternative to the old beanbag chairs that kids love because they are both way more attractive and refined while still being comfortable.

They would be great in a teen’s bedroom or a kids playroom or even to grab for outside as extra seating. Comfortable and chic!

Laura Megroz, pillows, rugs

It seems that every store I walked into in Rhode Island this summer is loaded with pillows and rugs by artist Laura Megroz. And I suppose it’s for a good reason. Her designs are charming and fit in very well with the coastal lifestyle that people in this part of the country enjoy.

Megroz has many designs that don’t follow a coastal theme, but does tend to design for popular vacation destinations whether it be a camp in the Adirondacks or the shores of New England.

Her pieces would be great when used as an accent rug in a kitchen or entry or a pillow in a corner chair or on a bed. I couldn’t help but to include the black lab pillow below since I have a black lab mix and a boat about that size, the “Toy Boat” we call it. Now if only she weren’t afraid of the water.

Because these pillows and rugs are hooked, they tend to lend themselves to a little bit of a country feel so I wouldn’t go overboard with putting them in every room in the house, unless of course you really love the country look. I, of course, would generally recommend not going overboard with any sort of theme, but a piece of her work here and there is sure to put a smile on your face.

Throw Pillows

Many of us who are moms are already familiar with the fabulous nursery and children’s bedding designs of Serena & Lily. The company launched their first line in 2004 with bedding and added upholstered furniture such as gliders and headboards as well as lighting, rugs and custom paint colors to match their fabrics, but always a bit more geared towards chidren.

Tess Bedding
But over the past year, I’ve noticed that they have started adding more home decor that isn’t baby or kid oriented, and I must say they are doing a spectacular job at it.

Custom Upholstered Furniture
In addition to their fabulous bedding, you can now get custom upholstered furniture for your bedroom, living room or dining room using the fabulous Serena & Lily fabrics. Whether you are looking for something calm and traditional or bold and modern, they have something for you.

Lucky Lacquered Table
Plus, they have added unique pieces to add that pop of color or eclectic feel to your home.

Greek Key Lamp

Their lighting selections have always been great, but now they have more sophistacated offerings.

Navy Deco Frame Rug

And the Serena & Lily rugs are simple but still make a statement.

Leaf Diamond Fabric

You can also buy the Serena & Lily fabrics by the yard to add coordinating curtains or to reupholster an existing piece of furniture.

Punch Paint

And of course, the Serena & Lily paint ties it all together. Whether you are a design diva or design challenged, Serena & Lily couldn’t make it any easier to create a beautiful room for yourself or the kids.
