Dransfield & Ross, IKEA Hacks, Jonathan Adler, Lack Table, Nailhead Trim, Regent Arm Chair

Twice in the last two days I’ve come across nailhead details that I just couldn’t resist and so I took that as a sign that you all really needed some more nailhead trim in your lives. The thing about nailhead trim is that it always take an item up a notch and is an easy way to make an otherwise ho hum piece chic, if not spectacular. Such is the case with the above nailhead trim side table put together by Clementine & Olive. Yes, that is two IKEA Lack tables put together and trimmed! The Lack table is one of my most favorite pieces of furniture on the planet. I just can’t think of another piece that offers as much versatility while still being good looking and only costing $7. That’s right, $7! I have them in my living room and just picked up another for my daughter’s room and I used them without the legs as my design boards when I was at RISD. I digress!

And then there is using nailhead trim in a more decorative pattern like on this desk pinboard by Courtney Hill Interiors. Who wouldn’t want to stick their to-do list up there? And the design is very simple and easy to do, but has a huge impact visually.

And then there is the use of it in a more traditional use like with this Regent Arm Chair in one of my favorite colors by one of my most favorite designers, Jonathan Adler.

Or you can go whole hog with it like this shot from House Beautiful and add nailhead trim to your bed, walls, and everything else in the room. It really is a nice way to add interest to and otherwise expansive space.

Or if you aren’t ready to commit or really want it in every detail in your house, grab the Dransfield & Ross Soap Dispenser with nailhead trim. They offer a complete boudoir set as well as a great selection of tabletop items with nailhead trim.

Now, where shall I add it to my house?

As I am sure most of you have noticed, there is no shortage of nautical rope and knots on the pages of your favorite catalogs and web sites this spring. From headbands, necklaces and belts to shirts with rope prints, it is everywhere. While it may be trendy to wear, and while nautical knots and rope aren’t exactly commonplace in most house, they are still a pretty classic element in coastal decor. Here are a few of my favorite items to incorporate it into your decor whether you are living in the city or sitting by the seaside.
If you are ready to make a commitment to this style, you can’t go wrong with Jonathan Adler’s Rope Wallpaper.

Or you can go for a more subtle look with the Ralph Lauren Lautrec Silver Rope Frame.

This pillow from Dransfield & Ross’ Flagship Collection is always there to help when you forgot how to tie that essential knot. Add just a small touch of knotwork or transform a dresser or cabinet by changing out the existing knobs with Anthropologie’s Coiled Rope Knobs.

This Rope Towel Ring from Stonk Knots in the UK is a perfect touch for a nautical loo.

Let the sea breezes in with the Marseille Knot Door Stopper from Two’s Company. Or protect your table with these Rope Coasters by Shelling Sailfish on Etsy.Nothing makes me happier than uncommon uses for common products, and I love these hanging beds featured in Coastal Living. Another great uncommon use is as a banister railing like this installation by Outhwaite Ropemakers…I’m thinking of doing this one in my house. They make a great tieback as well like this application from Stonk Knots.Or you can do it yourself like I did here in with the curtains in my son’s room. I simply went to my local nautical supply store and bought two cleats and the appropriate amount of rope (very inexpensive, by the way), ran the rope through the rod pocket and looped around the cleat to hold it securely. I also plan to put rope up as molding in this room.

Dransfield & Ross, grosgrain chair, grosgrain pillow, grosgrain ribbon

Today is one of those days when I have the feeling that there is a higher power trying to tell me something. For months, actually probably years, I have been designing products in my head that focus on the use of grosgrain ribbon. Newport is pretty much a grosgrain world- CK Bradley, Vineyard Vines, J. Crew -so it’s not unusual to dream in grosgrain around here. This morning I finally went and bought several yards of ribbon to start playing with and turn these designs into reality, but before I could start, I wanted to get the day’s blog post up. I was busily researching another topic when lo and behold I came across this grosgrain chair and pillow by Dransfield & Ross. There were many other great grosgrain pillow designs as well. Oddly enough, while digging through the ribbons this morning I came across a navy blue and kelly green one that matched my dining room perfectly. The thought crossed my mind to pick it up because I need to recover the chairs in there, but how I would do it with ribbon wasn’t coming to me quickly enough (as my 11 month old was unraveling a roll of ribbon across the entire store). Anyway, I’m not sure if the powers above are trying to tell me that the ideas rolling around in my head for years are indeed genius or that someone else is already doing something similar (I think I’ll go with genius!), but either way, I think my dining room chairs are going to look awesome with their new grosgrain upholstery.
