Kid's beds, kid's storage solutions

Many of you who have children are probably familiar with the fun and stylish kids’ catalog Land of Nod. But as I was perusing the catalog at the palace of catalogs (a.k.a. Pamela’s house) so many things caught my eye for more than just the kid spaces in my home. To start these chevron baskets come in bright and bold colors to add a pop to any room and come in a set of three nesting baskets. I love baskets with tops so that you can really hide things away.

I also am loving these Canvas Mega Sorters. Last week at Brimfield I found a vintage canvas mail bin that I thought would be great for mudroom storage, but I didn’t buy it and ever since I’ve been obsessed with finding something else that would fit the bill. With three storage compartments this will allow me to separate my son’s, daughter’s, and husband’s hats, mittens, shoes, and whatever else they keep in the mudroom. And at $25 it’s even more irresistible. The big question is should I get it in navy or orange?

Also, in the basket category are these great looking Load Bearing Storage Baskets and Hampers.

turquoise bed

I love the Jenny Lind style beds and in this turquoise color they are just fabulous! It also comes in white and raspberry in both twin and full sizes. This bed is perfect for a beach house guest room!

yellow bedding

The Animales Grafico Bedding would make quite a statement on the turquoise bed, but it would also be great for just about any other bedroom in the house too.

colored poufs/stools

The Tuffet Seater is woven around a metal frame and can be used indoors or out. It would be great stacked on the patio for extra seating.

And for a little bit of glamor, these hanging mirrors are perfect for a powder room, entry, or bedroom.

The Squares to Spare Lamp adds a touch of modern chic to any room in the house…and comes with a rainbow of shade options to really customize your look.

And don’t forget to put something stylish underfoot like the 100% cotton Magic Carpet Rug.

So the next time you’re looking for some fun and colorful decor items (that also happen to be really affordable) consider turning to Land of Nod for big design even though it’s geared towards our littlest inhabitants.

Bathroom Decorating Ideas, Serena & Lily

silver oval mirror

Serena & Lily has introduced its new bath collection and there are a few pieces that we find irresistible! First up, the Sullivan Mirror. I love this mirror for its simplicity and elegance which would work well in many rooms beyond the bath. It reminds me of the pewter mirror by Maison de l’Etain that I have hanging in my dining room which I wish I could get my hands on again.

It’s not always easy to find a good looking shower curtain, but the Ventura Shower Curtain as well as several of the others offer simple, chic, elegance that make a statement without overtaking the space.

The Juice Crochet Bath Towels will add the perfect little pop of color and detail to your bath and come in three of my favorite colors.

If you need a little seating in your bath, this Slipcovered Terry Cube is just perfect.

And for the floor, I love the Broad Stripe Dhurrie Rug in four fabulous colors.

Last, but most certainly not least, every home should have the Seagrass Basket. Use it to collect laundry or store extra bath towels or take it out of the bath and into the living room or mudroom for extra storage for magazines, toys, shoes, and more.

Chevron Rugs, Potter's Bench, Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Summer 2012, Rope Lamp, Sail Canopy, Wicker Furniture

Did you get the new Pottery Barn catalog last week? I have to say that there are quite a few treasures in there, actually in both the regular catalog and the kids catalog. So many in fact that I thought I’d cull some of them out and share some of the amazing-ness with you, just in cased you missed it! Let’s start with the insane boat cleat and nautical rope gallery wall above (sorry, I couldn’t find a better picture). Love, love, love!

And since you know I love all things nautical, this Rope Table Lamp definitely fits the bill. You just have to make sure to use it as a fun accent and not as overkill. For instance you wouldn’t want to have a ship’s wheel coffee table (just in case you happen to have one of those) and these lamps. Sometimes less is more!

Also in lighting, the new Caged Glass Pendant is a great look and a great size at a great price!

The Woven Rattan Drink Cooler is perfect for summer entertaining indoors or out!

As you may remember, I love salt cellars, and this turtle set couldn’t be cuter. Plus, they have lids which makes me think that maybe, just maybe, my salt won’t get sticky in them here by the ocean where it’s a major problem.

I’m kind of obsessed with the dhurrie rugs in a chevron pattern or bordered in colors like pink, navy, and chocolate.

And the pint sized Chesapeake Potter’s Bench–can you stand it!

The Tavern Chairs have an awesome vintage vibe and I love the colors, but I have to say I probably wouldn’t spend $119 each on them. Fingers crossed for a great sale!

The Tree Fort Loft Bed rocks!

The Wicker Elephant Table may be in the kids catalog, but it would be equally at home in an adult space too.

The Woven Shark also is super cool and only $39.

If I weren’t married to a sail maker, I’d be all over this Sail Canopy.

I think I could keep going, but that ought to be enough to start your summer shopping!

Yes I admit, I have a WICKED sweet tooth.  I prefer things like cake to ice cream, and chocolate to jelly beans, however when it comes to cupcakes, I am not choosy. Frosting, fluffy, moist cakes wrapped in little paper wrappers…heaven.  Luckily I have a friend who not only creates these little bite sized confections, she blogs about them!

The master of these creations, Jessica Pizzo, is one stylish lady herself so it’s no wonder her cupcakes are so creative and inspiring.  I never thought my love for butter-cream could translate into style ideas but it has completely inspired me.  Rich texture and color come to mind when I look at these mouthwatering images.  I am reminded of soft textured linen, pretty poufs, patterned fabrics, embroidered pillows, and luxurious living rooms.

Now imagine lounging on one of these poufs or in the luxurious living room while sampling a perfectly portioned and beautifully decorated cupcake, served on a Lucite platter. That’s right, I will have my cake AND eat it too!

French Sailor Stripes, Garnet Hill, Haus Interior, Jean Paul Gaultier, Land of Nod, Nautical Home Decor, Nautical Inspiration, Nautical Stripes, Roche Bobois, St. James Shirts, stripes

I don’t know if it’s the salt air wafting in my windows or the ships on the horizon when I gaze out the window, but somehow sailor stripes (the ones found on a classic St. James shirt) have become part of the fabric of my existence. I absolutely can’t resist them. My favorite is the combination of navy (but of course) and white, but I’ve also been known to fall hard for red and white, red and navy, orange and white or yellow and white. And while the nautical stripe has been a staple on the pages of fashion magazines for the past few seasons, we don’t often see it translate into home decor. I have a project to bring these stripes to life in my house that I’m hoping to be able to reveal very soon, but I wanted to find sailor stripes for the home that don’t require quite the same level of work as the ones coming to my house are going to need.

Then I came across these French Stripe Sheets from Garnet Hill last week and thought they were just about the perfect way to add sailor stripes to your life. And they are available as sheets (even for the crib!) and duvets so that you can make them as much of a focal point as you like.

Land of Nod also offers this Nautical Sheet Set which would do the trick.

These DIY striped headboards are pretty phenomenal as well, and I love the orange piping on them.

Or perhaps you favor something a little more portable like this striped kids play tent…

which also comes in red and has a coordinating floor pillow available.

Although I have to say that a handful of these sailor stripe pillows on a crisp white couch would just be perfection.

And for the table, Kahler’s Omaggio Vase would do the trick.

Or you could go much more highbrow with a look like this one by Jean Paul Gaultier for the ELLE Decoration Suite. To. Die. For. Sure it might not be super comfortable, but it sure gives me some inspiration on how to create some standout pieces with the same feel but more function.

Or there is Gaultier’s collection from his collaboration with Roche Bobois. I would do just about anything for that rug!

Oh, how I will never tire of the classic French sailor stripe. Stay tuned for a new way to use them very soon. I’ll give you one hint…it involves paint.

Chunky Braided Wool Rug, Nautical Rugs, Restoration Hardware, Winter Rugs

It’s officially sweater season even though here in the northeast we’ve been enjoying some unexpected 65 degree days. But ever since I laid eyes eyes on Restoration Hardware’s Chunky Braided Wool Rug I’ve wanted to wrap myself up in it. Doesn’t it look cozy? It would be amazing in a bedroom or cozy den. This rug (I’m partial to the cream color-seems nautical) plus a fire, cup of coffee, good book, and down filled sofa I could sink into would just about equal a perfect Sunday afternoon. Ahhh, winter weekends.

Anchor Rug, Bond Collection tables, British Flag rug, fish platters, fucshia laquer, Giraffe Lamp, Hollywood Lamps, Jonathan Adler, Jonathan Adler Junior Collection, Mrs. Godfrey Chair, New York International Gift Fair, NYIGF, Pantone, Ropes Wallpaper, Talitha Rug, Zebra rug

I couldn’t have been any happier than to see the Jonathan Adler booth meet me at the top of the first escalator I went up as I entered the New York International Gift Fair on Monday. If I haven’t made it clear before, I am OBSESSED with his products. His designs are the epitome of smile inducing objects. They are just the perfect mix of preppy, modern, and fun. I don’t know if I am suddenly loving turquoise because it’s the Pantone color of the year, but the Mrs. Godfrey Chair (above) is awesome and comes with an equally fabulous name. I’m also totally digging the Talitha Rug under it.

I love the combination of the chunky wood and lucite in the Bond Collection Tables. And the gold side tables are an amazing piece of functional art.

One of my favorite Jonathan Adler pieces are his fish platters, but I think all of his tableware adds a nice splash of color to every day.

Hollywood Lamps, British Flag and Anchor Rugs, and pillows galore. Yes please!

I love a splash of fucshia lacquer mixed in with all the white. And the Ropes Wallpaper will make its way into my house some day.

The only thing that could be better than his products, are his products in miniature. The Jonathan Adler Junior Collection is to DIE for. I seriously can’t decide what my favorite piece is, but I’m pretty fond of both the Junior Lampert Sofa and the ultra chic Junior Templeton Chair.

I’m also really keen on the Anchor Blanket, Zebra Rugs, and those adorable animal puzzles on the shelf. The Dinosaur Lamp is also in the running to replace the Giraffe Lamp as my favorite. I could probably change the name of this blog to the “Jonathan Adler’s Biggest Fan Blog” so I better stop now before I go too far!

Laura Megroz Pillows and Rugs

Laura Megroz, pillows, rugs

It seems that every store I walked into in Rhode Island this summer is loaded with pillows and rugs by artist Laura Megroz. And I suppose it’s for a good reason. Her designs are charming and fit in very well with the coastal lifestyle that people in this part of the country enjoy.

Megroz has many designs that don’t follow a coastal theme, but does tend to design for popular vacation destinations whether it be a camp in the Adirondacks or the shores of New England.

Her pieces would be great when used as an accent rug in a kitchen or entry or a pillow in a corner chair or on a bed. I couldn’t help but to include the black lab pillow below since I have a black lab mix and a boat about that size, the “Toy Boat” we call it. Now if only she weren’t afraid of the water.

Because these pillows and rugs are hooked, they tend to lend themselves to a little bit of a country feel so I wouldn’t go overboard with putting them in every room in the house, unless of course you really love the country look. I, of course, would generally recommend not going overboard with any sort of theme, but a piece of her work here and there is sure to put a smile on your face.

Jonathan Adler, Jonathan Adler Junior Collection, Junior Letter pillow, Lampert Sofa, Lion rug, Sun wallpaper

Back at the beginning of 2010 I just about jumped out of my own skin with excitement when I heard about the new Jonathan Adler Junior Collection. Well at last it is starting to become available. I mean a junior version of the Lampert Sofa? Yes please! I might actually start to look forward to seeing my kids’ stuff scattered about the house if it looked like this.

This Junior Letter Pillow would be just perfect for my little Carolina’s room. And here are a few of my other favorites too. Lion Rug

Sun Wallpaper
Giraffe Wall Sconce

Some of the items have actually been in his collection for a while, but they are perfect for kids and that’s what makes his stuff so wonderful. You can buy it now and they can still use it for years and years to come. A perfect balance of modern and traditional. I say these are my favorites, but really I’d like one of everything. Actually, better make it two!

Throw Pillows

Many of us who are moms are already familiar with the fabulous nursery and children’s bedding designs of Serena & Lily. The company launched their first line in 2004 with bedding and added upholstered furniture such as gliders and headboards as well as lighting, rugs and custom paint colors to match their fabrics, but always a bit more geared towards chidren.

Tess Bedding
But over the past year, I’ve noticed that they have started adding more home decor that isn’t baby or kid oriented, and I must say they are doing a spectacular job at it.

Custom Upholstered Furniture
In addition to their fabulous bedding, you can now get custom upholstered furniture for your bedroom, living room or dining room using the fabulous Serena & Lily fabrics. Whether you are looking for something calm and traditional or bold and modern, they have something for you.

Lucky Lacquered Table
Plus, they have added unique pieces to add that pop of color or eclectic feel to your home.

Greek Key Lamp

Their lighting selections have always been great, but now they have more sophistacated offerings.

Navy Deco Frame Rug

And the Serena & Lily rugs are simple but still make a statement.

Leaf Diamond Fabric

You can also buy the Serena & Lily fabrics by the yard to add coordinating curtains or to reupholster an existing piece of furniture.

Punch Paint

And of course, the Serena & Lily paint ties it all together. Whether you are a design diva or design challenged, Serena & Lily couldn’t make it any easier to create a beautiful room for yourself or the kids.
