It’s no secret that I’ve long been obsessed with pink peonies, and for the past several months I’ve also been enamored with the color aqua, and the two of them together is just sheer perfection. I paired this year’s first big bloom from my garden with the vintage aqua mason jar I picked up at Brimfield a few weeks ago to make my Memorial Day weekend a little brighter. But it doesn’t stop there. Oh, no, no, no. After several months of redesigning my daughter’s room (in my head) and going back and forth on how to create this color combination in her room I have finally made a few calls. The issue is not so much that I didn’t know how to incorporate the color combination, but more that I didn’t want to paint her room pink and half of the rooms in my house are already some shade of blue so I wasn’t sure I wanted to go there either. BUT, the paint has been purchased. The bedding has been purchased. And several accents have been purchased. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s to come of my 3-year-old’s room!

So that is just a taste of what’s to come. I’m so looking forward to making this color combination a permanent fixture in my home. There is much more to come in this room as I also incorporate some of what already exists in the space which has a bit of a vintage eclectic feel. It’s guaranteed to be a fun and colorful space!

Stay tuned…

Kid's beds, kid's storage solutions

Many of you who have children are probably familiar with the fun and stylish kids’ catalog Land of Nod. But as I was perusing the catalog at the palace of catalogs (a.k.a. Pamela’s house) so many things caught my eye for more than just the kid spaces in my home. To start these chevron baskets come in bright and bold colors to add a pop to any room and come in a set of three nesting baskets. I love baskets with tops so that you can really hide things away.

I also am loving these Canvas Mega Sorters. Last week at Brimfield I found a vintage canvas mail bin that I thought would be great for mudroom storage, but I didn’t buy it and ever since I’ve been obsessed with finding something else that would fit the bill. With three storage compartments this will allow me to separate my son’s, daughter’s, and husband’s hats, mittens, shoes, and whatever else they keep in the mudroom. And at $25 it’s even more irresistible. The big question is should I get it in navy or orange?

Also, in the basket category are these great looking Load Bearing Storage Baskets and Hampers.

turquoise bed

I love the Jenny Lind style beds and in this turquoise color they are just fabulous! It also comes in white and raspberry in both twin and full sizes. This bed is perfect for a beach house guest room!

yellow bedding

The Animales Grafico Bedding would make quite a statement on the turquoise bed, but it would also be great for just about any other bedroom in the house too.

colored poufs/stools

The Tuffet Seater is woven around a metal frame and can be used indoors or out. It would be great stacked on the patio for extra seating.

And for a little bit of glamor, these hanging mirrors are perfect for a powder room, entry, or bedroom.

The Squares to Spare Lamp adds a touch of modern chic to any room in the house…and comes with a rainbow of shade options to really customize your look.

And don’t forget to put something stylish underfoot like the 100% cotton Magic Carpet Rug.

So the next time you’re looking for some fun and colorful decor items (that also happen to be really affordable) consider turning to Land of Nod for big design even though it’s geared towards our littlest inhabitants.

I don’t know if it’s the salt air wafting in my windows or the ships on the horizon when I gaze out the window, but somehow sailor stripes (the ones found on a classic St. James shirt) have become part of the fabric of my existence. I absolutely can’t resist them. My favorite is the combination of navy (but of course) and white, but I’ve also been known to fall hard for red and white, red and navy, orange and white or yellow and white. And while the nautical stripe has been a staple on the pages of fashion magazines for the past few seasons, we don’t often see it translate into home decor. I have a project to bring these stripes to life in my house that I’m hoping to be able to reveal very soon, but I wanted to find sailor stripes for the home that don’t require quite the same level of work as the ones coming to my house are going to need.

Then I came across these French Stripe Sheets from Garnet Hill last week and thought they were just about the perfect way to add sailor stripes to your life. And they are available as sheets (even for the crib!) and duvets so that you can make them as much of a focal point as you like.

Land of Nod also offers this Nautical Sheet Set which would do the trick.

These DIY striped headboards are pretty phenomenal as well, and I love the orange piping on them.

Or perhaps you favor something a little more portable like this striped kids play tent…

which also comes in red and has a coordinating floor pillow available.

Although I have to say that a handful of these sailor stripe pillows on a crisp white couch would just be perfection.

And for the table, Kahler’s Omaggio Vase would do the trick.

Or you could go much more highbrow with a look like this one by Jean Paul Gaultier for the ELLE Decoration Suite. To. Die. For. Sure it might not be super comfortable, but it sure gives me some inspiration on how to create some standout pieces with the same feel but more function.

Or there is Gaultier’s collection from his collaboration with Roche Bobois. I would do just about anything for that rug!

Oh, how I will never tire of the classic French sailor stripe. Stay tuned for a new way to use them very soon. I’ll give you one hint…it involves paint.

Belgian Linen, Besame Mucho, Butter London, Diptyque, Dr. Hauschka, Key West, Marvis, Petronia Street, Tocca

Chateau and Bungalow’s dear friend and contributor, Maaike Bernstrom suggested that while I was in Key West,  I pay a visit to one of her favorite shops.  There, tucked away on Petronia Street, I found it, Besame Mucho.  I knew Maaike had great taste so I was prepared to walk into a great boutique.  What I found was a shop that is as close to as a spa for my senses as it gets.

Owner Meredith Bollong has been filling her shop with items that inspire her for 13 years and it is obvious that this is no touristy T-shirt shop.  From simple Linen shift dresses to a fully stocked apothecary, Besame Mucho is layered with texture.  Tocca and Diptyque candles, Dr. Hauschka Skin Care, jewelery, teas and treasures are all set in a neutral color palate that wraps itself around each product like a blanket (or a Belgian Linen comforter in this case).

For 3 days I lingered around this beautifully merchandised shop and I still think I overlooked a few things.  I did make it home with a whimsical bicycle horn, Butter London nail polish and my favorite, Marvis Toothpaste.  I would say that combination says it all.

John Robshaw’s beautiful Indian inspired linens and pillows were lovely as always at the New York International Gift Fair. And while I’m a big fan of his bedding, my favorite items in the booth were his floor pillows.

These oversized pillows are a great alternative to the old beanbag chairs that kids love because they are both way more attractive and refined while still being comfortable.

They would be great in a teen’s bedroom or a kids playroom or even to grab for outside as extra seating. Comfortable and chic!

MatoukParterre Bedding
I always love to write about businesses that are in my own backyard. There’s something so nice about knowing there are such talented and creative people nearby. Matouk, a third generation family owned fine linen company, based in Fall River, MA not only provides a great looking product, but they are exquisitely crafted.

Matouk Hadley Seersucker Bedding
In addition to their standard collection of bedding and bath items, they also have a couture collection calledBespoke. The theory behind it is one of my favorite’s. We buy couture wedding dresses and wear them for a few hours so why don’t we treat ourselves to that luxury in the items we use every day. We should buy the best quality we can afford for the items that we use the most.

Bespoke Alhambre Bedding
Matouk also has a collaboration with Lulu de Kwiatkowski, Founder and Chief Designer of Lulu DK Fabrics and Wallpapers. Lulu DK Matouk is filled with colorful patterns that fit in great with classic interiors, but with a contemporary feel.

Lulu DK Matouk Harbor Island Bedding
With so many options to choose from, it would be hard not to find just what you’re looking for in the Matouk product line.

Lulu DK Matouk Love Pillows

And if you’re in the Fall River, MA area you can pop into the Matouk Factory Store for a deal or two on these beautiful linens.

Benjamin Moore, diy, headboard, Manuel Canovas, TJMaxx, Turquoise, Yves Delorme

My latest project has been a new headboard for our master bedroom. I’d been looking for fabric for a while and when I found this turquoise starfish print on linen back in March, I knew it was the one. So I bought it and the solid turquoise fabric to pipe it in and then proceeded to let it sit in a closet for 4 months constantly thinking that I would get to it just as soon as I had a spare moment. Then as if she were a gift from heaven, my most fabulous aunt Juanita who loves to have a project and is a wonderful perfectionist stopped by to borrow my sewing machine and asked me what projects I had done since she had last been over. So I showed her the family photo gallery wall and the kitchen message center and pulled out the fabric and told her my plan. The next day she called and offered to help if I wanted her to. Hmmm, let me think…yes!!!!

We were winging it a bit, but you can learn from our mistakes. We used a solid wood six panel door that my dog had scratched the heck out of (there may or may not be a door on our downstairs bathroom at the moment) as our base. We inserted foam into the area where the panels were to prevent and divets, and then wrapped the door with a queen size piece of quilter’s batting. We attached everything with a staple gun except the foam which we taped down with industrial tape. Unfortunately, it didn’t give us quite the thickness we were hoping for so we added a bit more batting and then wrapped it again with a few old towels to give it more thickness. That was perfect.

Next we laid out the fabric on the door, centered it where we wanted it and cut it to size with an additional 1/2 inch on the top and sides for seems and about 3 inches on the bottom so that we could wrap the fabric around the bottom and fasten it with staples to the back. Note that I bought railroaded fabric (which can be run either way without the pattern looking sideways) so that I wouldn’t have to have seems on the front of the headboard. I bought 1 3/4 yards which was cutting it pretty close so buy 2 yards if you can just to be on the safe side.

We also cut 3 strips of the starfish fabric to about the depth of the headboard plus 4-6″. One was the length of the headboard, and 2 the height of the headboard, and we sewed them together so that the seems would fall in the top corners of the headboard and it would appear slip covered. Then we sewed the front piece, turquoise piping and strip of fabric that would cover the depth of the headboard all together. We flipped it to the right side, put it over the door and fastened the fabric on the back with a staple gun. And voila, a fabulous new headboard!

Of course you can’t have a new headboard without a new duvet too. One of the reasons it has taken me so long to do this room is that I painted the walls Bittersweet Chocolate by Benjamin Moore which is very dark, but which I also love. My husband said no flower bedding, and I didn’t want anything that was going to make the room look any darker, but I was having no luck finding anything in my price range that also met those requirements. I also didn’t want to spend a lot of money because we have two small children and a dog that destroyed our last two duvets that I loved from Yves Delorme and Manuel Canovas. So I bought two king size white flat sheets at TJ Maxx and cut them down to fit my down comforter and piped them with the same turquoise fabric that we piped the headboard with. I’m contemplating adding some pretty gold buttons that I have, but it might be too much for this particular room. We’ll see.

Either way, I love how both the headboard and the duvet came out, and both for under $100. I’m hoping to use the money I saved on two ceramic turquoise lamps that I spotted at TJ Maxx too. And while I am not so thrilled with the minimal styling and wrinkled-ness displayed in the photos here considering I have helped style many a bed for photo shoots, it would probably have taken me another 4 months to post this if I waited til I had an ironed duvet…unless of course my fabulous aunt Juanita stopped by again.

Throw Pillows

Many of us who are moms are already familiar with the fabulous nursery and children’s bedding designs of Serena & Lily. The company launched their first line in 2004 with bedding and added upholstered furniture such as gliders and headboards as well as lighting, rugs and custom paint colors to match their fabrics, but always a bit more geared towards chidren.

Tess Bedding
But over the past year, I’ve noticed that they have started adding more home decor that isn’t baby or kid oriented, and I must say they are doing a spectacular job at it.

Custom Upholstered Furniture
In addition to their fabulous bedding, you can now get custom upholstered furniture for your bedroom, living room or dining room using the fabulous Serena & Lily fabrics. Whether you are looking for something calm and traditional or bold and modern, they have something for you.

Lucky Lacquered Table
Plus, they have added unique pieces to add that pop of color or eclectic feel to your home.

Greek Key Lamp

Their lighting selections have always been great, but now they have more sophistacated offerings.

Navy Deco Frame Rug

And the Serena & Lily rugs are simple but still make a statement.

Leaf Diamond Fabric

You can also buy the Serena & Lily fabrics by the yard to add coordinating curtains or to reupholster an existing piece of furniture.

Punch Paint

And of course, the Serena & Lily paint ties it all together. Whether you are a design diva or design challenged, Serena & Lily couldn’t make it any easier to create a beautiful room for yourself or the kids.
