5 Unusual Things to Grill This Summer When Entertaining (Thanks to Williams-Sonoma)

Gourmet Grilling, Grill Tools

As I was perusing the Williams-Sonoma web site yesterday in search of great Father’s Day gifts (for a story on Parentables, not for my own husband or father–sorry guys) I was totally inspired to get creative on the grill this summer. Honestly, I tend to leave the grilling to my husband, but I am capable of it (shhh! don’t tell him). But these grill tools might have me running to the grill every time we have people over this summer.

For one, the meatball grill basket. I mean come on! How fun is that? I have a feeling that these might be a sought after appetizer, and of course I like that they’re cute and I can find a fun way to serve them.

Next up is the quesadilla grill basket. I love a good quesadilla (they have cheese and I have a cheese tooth–it’s simple math), but I wouldn’t think to put them on the grill because that seems like a disaster waiting to happen when it comes time to FLIP! But clearly that is no longer the case.

Have you ever had a grilled potato? They are delicious, but the way I’ve had them is rubbed in butter and then wrapped in tinfoil. This potato grilling rack looks like it might be a healthier, but still appealing alternative.

You don’t often hear of a lot of people serving meatloaf these days, but I’m a fan every once in a while. I even have a meatloaf pan, and at one time I would make it once a month or so (it’s one of the only ways I find ground turkey tolerable), but I never considered grilling meatloaf, and I imagine that this would be quite delicious. Add it to my list of things to try out!

And lastly, the mini pizza tiles so that you can make personalized grilled pizzas to everyone’s liking. Grilled pizza is a big deal here in Rhode Island where it was quite possibly invented, and you can get some really good dough around here, but I’m always a little nervous to throw it right on the grill. I’m certain these would have me creating the next great grilled pizza masterpiece (at least in my own home).

Suddenly I feel like some invitations need to be sent out! Which grill tool are you most excited to try?

Color-Tipped Cutting Boards, Sundance Catalog cutting boards, unique cutting boards

This tablescape is the perfect mix of industrial and country chic for beautiful, casual living.  From the varnished raw steel Mid-Century Cafe Seating by Tolix to the reclaimed Pine barn planked Longmont table to the tulip inspired New Amsterdam Dhurrie it is a vignette to consider in your loft apartment to your beach cottage.  My favorite detail in this image (and one with DIY potential if you need instant gratification) are the Color-Tipped Cutting Boards on the wall!

With five sizes and colors to choose from these Color Tipped Cutting Boards from the Sundance Catalog would be great in any kitchen.  Depending on the style of your kitchen these could be an additional nod to a nautical theme, or an artisan touch in an eclectic kitchen, or a colorful pop for the country chic look.  Another great find at the Palace of Catalogs!

Does everyone know about Cathrineholm?  For all my love of dishware and anything enameled these have been hiding in plain sight (the collection above is amazing, right?!) until I spotted a great DIY Cathrineholm Votive project on How About Orange, and was intrigued by the pattern and colors.  While a couple of patterns are available, the lotus pattern below is the iconic look of this vintage mid-century enamelware from Norway created by Grete Prytz Kittleson.

If you love this vintage look and desire Catherineholm dishware you’ll need to cyber-stalk pieces on Ebay or Etsy because production stopped in 1970 when the company closed.  If you are handy though, and need pops of color on a Spring table, then this simple DIY is perfect.  All you need is construction paper, vellum, clear votives, tape and an X-acto knife.  Voila!

These Catherineholm votives are so useful and easy to make.  It would also be amazing to apply this DIY to cylindrical vases of varying heights.  Thinking about using navy, purple, grey and others colored papers for a modern twist on a winter table scape with berries and greens.  (Note to self:  great Fall DIY project!)

And, in the meantime, I might just pick up one of many Catherinholm giclée inspired posters available.  This is surely an inspirational item for my kitchen!

all white dining!

Last week Sarah noticed that I was in a “white” phase with my , and she was right.  It seems that every so often I crave the serenity of white-scaped interiors after the daily immersion in the world of color that surrounds us.  Even in a white interior, texture of materials, shape and structure of furniture, architectural details, lighting and a single accent color can pop the mono-chromatic space; white can be so chic and vibrant!

Serene White Bedroom

While white interiors may not be practical – there are numerous new technologies in textiles and paint that have more durable and washable properties! – they are beautiful to dream about.  Whisk me away to any of these rooms for a couple of hours, and I might be able to skip a visit to a spa.

Couldn’t resist . . . the Join cutlery place setting designed by Konstantin Slawinski is beautiful for any Spring or Summer tablescape!

If you love these as much as I do, then add them to your party closet.   Found a great tutorial on the Ding3000 website in case joining them isn’t as easy as it looks.

Beater whisk, Butterfly can opener, Chop Knife, Ding3000, Dustpan & Broom, Marianne Britt Jørgensen and Rikke Hagen, navy, Normann Copenhagen, Ole Jensen, pink, purple, Rainbow trivet

While I don’t spend as much time in the kitchen as I would like to – we have a chef in the family and it isn’t me! – I am always intrigued by the advancements in kitchen gadgetry.  The Beater whisk above has an updated design that is sleek, foldable and dishwasher safe.  And with seven colors to choose from there is one for every decor while saving space for other necessary items.

Not sure how my mis-en-place would be evaluated after using the Chop Knife, but I would look colorful and feel quite good using it.  The rubber sheath over the blade would make it safe to store in a drawer since it won’t fit into the knife block as well as make it comfortable to hold.

The Rainbow trivet stores compactly (above) and then opens up ready to hold all things hot (below).  This decorative trivet designed by the German design trio Ding3000 is produced in four colors and is machine washable.  I guess if I don’t do all the cooking I can add a trivet to my laundry, maybe.

In any kitchen you’ll find a variety of can openers from the old-school to fancy improved versions.  Not to add to the confusion, but maybe the Butterfly (below) can help you execute the task better?  This is an ergonomically designed can opener that is worth a try.

When it is time to clean up after a lively dinner party and its too late for the noisy vacuum, how about this sleek dustpan & broom?  This is not only colorful – six color ways – it has a hook to hang neatly out of the way.

Since we all love to discover our own treasures, I will stop while I am ahead and direct you to the wonderful world of Normann Copenhagen.  If you need function, and are a little obsessed with form and color like we are at Chateau & Bungalow, then you need to visit this shop.  Even chefs on sabbatical will enjoy exploring this world of amazing design.

As you know, we love vintage goodies here at Chateau & Bungalow.  And, this week I stumbled upon bellalulu‘s shop to discover a range of vintage objets that satiated my desire for the unusual mixed with funky function.  After making a quick wish list, I realized that Amy’s color inspiration was being channeled:  red was popping!  The vintage Kodak Timer above would be great for the kitchen, but also fun in a kid’s room.  How about a set of vintage game balls (below) placed in a clear glass bowl as a festive centerpiece, or nestle the balls in the galvanized bucket out in the backyard?  In addition to these beautiful red treasures, be sure to check out all of the vintage finds at bellalulu.

Sometimes something is so good that it keeps popping up and needs to be blogged about again.  The Pelle Bubble Chandelier is one such objet (x-large above!).  Back in 2010 when Sarah found this chandelier on Etsy there were only two size options to choose from, but now there are more sizes, finishes and cording options which must been seen!  The original bubble chandelier was the medium size, but now there is a small, large, x-large and jumbo.

In addition to the original bubble chandler, there is the elongated tall version as well as multiple gold leafed versions.  Each configuration of bubbles creates an amazing sculptural piece for any space.

If you love these chandeliers, then be sure to visit either the Pelle website or their brick-and-mortar shop in Brooklyn, NY to see more of their collections.  Jean and Oliver Pelle are a talented design duo that create unique lighting, furniture, jewelry and more for beautiful interiors.  And, my favorite part about the history of this chandelier is that it’s origins are a do-it-yourself project that Jean contributed to Readymade Magazine in 2008 . . .  great design is possible with DIY!

Chevron Rugs, Potter's Bench, Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Summer 2012, Rope Lamp, Sail Canopy, Wicker Furniture

Did you get the new Pottery Barn catalog last week? I have to say that there are quite a few treasures in there, actually in both the regular catalog and the kids catalog. So many in fact that I thought I’d cull some of them out and share some of the amazing-ness with you, just in cased you missed it! Let’s start with the insane boat cleat and nautical rope gallery wall above (sorry, I couldn’t find a better picture). Love, love, love!

And since you know I love all things nautical, this Rope Table Lamp definitely fits the bill. You just have to make sure to use it as a fun accent and not as overkill. For instance you wouldn’t want to have a ship’s wheel coffee table (just in case you happen to have one of those) and these lamps. Sometimes less is more!

Also in lighting, the new Caged Glass Pendant is a great look and a great size at a great price!

The Woven Rattan Drink Cooler is perfect for summer entertaining indoors or out!

As you may remember, I love salt cellars, and this turtle set couldn’t be cuter. Plus, they have lids which makes me think that maybe, just maybe, my salt won’t get sticky in them here by the ocean where it’s a major problem.

I’m kind of obsessed with the dhurrie rugs in a chevron pattern or bordered in colors like pink, navy, and chocolate.

And the pint sized Chesapeake Potter’s Bench–can you stand it!

The Tavern Chairs have an awesome vintage vibe and I love the colors, but I have to say I probably wouldn’t spend $119 each on them. Fingers crossed for a great sale!

The Tree Fort Loft Bed rocks!

The Wicker Elephant Table may be in the kids catalog, but it would be equally at home in an adult space too.

The Woven Shark also is super cool and only $39.

If I weren’t married to a sail maker, I’d be all over this Sail Canopy.

I think I could keep going, but that ought to be enough to start your summer shopping!
