Color-Tipped Cutting Boards, Sundance Catalog cutting boards, unique cutting boards

This tablescape is the perfect mix of industrial and country chic for beautiful, casual living.  From the varnished raw steel Mid-Century Cafe Seating by Tolix to the reclaimed Pine barn planked Longmont table to the tulip inspired New Amsterdam Dhurrie it is a vignette to consider in your loft apartment to your beach cottage.  My favorite detail in this image (and one with DIY potential if you need instant gratification) are the Color-Tipped Cutting Boards on the wall!

With five sizes and colors to choose from these Color Tipped Cutting Boards from the Sundance Catalog would be great in any kitchen.  Depending on the style of your kitchen these could be an additional nod to a nautical theme, or an artisan touch in an eclectic kitchen, or a colorful pop for the country chic look.  Another great find at the Palace of Catalogs!

Privet House, The Shops at Target

This Sunday Target will launch it’s exciting new concept of shop-in-shops called The Shops. They’ve hand-picked five boutiques from across the country to re-create the experience within Target stores with merchandise exclusively designed for Target. While the shops offer everything from dog biscuits to candy, I am of course most excited for the Privet House shop. This Connecticut based home emporium offers a wonderful collection of home goods including antiques and new merchandise and Target has done an excellent job recreating the look and feel of the shop with products that are certain to be highly sought after. Here’s a peak!

The colors, the patterns, the style, the whole collection is just fabulous!

And just for the record I’m pretty excited for all the other shops too.

See you on Sunday at Target!

Who knew arriving to a yoga class 30 minutes early would work out so well?  Having a few minutes to myself, I hopped downstairs to a relatively new home decor shop here in Newport, Venetucci Home.  I walked in and noticed the various shades of blue throughout the shop.  Linen slip covered furniture happens to be a look I am in love with so I just about fell over when I saw chairs covered in this bright azure blue linen, .

There were beautiful textiles and accessories with hints of blue throughout.  The nautical pieces mixed in with traditional styling, put this local shop high on my like list.  A navy accent wall with gold framed paintings was the icing on the cake.

Thankfully, I am in the market for a new dining room table and chairs.  I think that is reason enough to return to Venetucci Home and skip yoga!

Sometimes something is so good that it keeps popping up and needs to be blogged about again.  The Pelle Bubble Chandelier is one such objet (x-large above!).  Back in 2010 when Sarah found this chandelier on Etsy there were only two size options to choose from, but now there are more sizes, finishes and cording options which must been seen!  The original bubble chandelier was the medium size, but now there is a small, large, x-large and jumbo.

In addition to the original bubble chandler, there is the elongated tall version as well as multiple gold leafed versions.  Each configuration of bubbles creates an amazing sculptural piece for any space.

If you love these chandeliers, then be sure to visit either the Pelle website or their brick-and-mortar shop in Brooklyn, NY to see more of their collections.  Jean and Oliver Pelle are a talented design duo that create unique lighting, furniture, jewelry and more for beautiful interiors.  And, my favorite part about the history of this chandelier is that it’s origins are a do-it-yourself project that Jean contributed to Readymade Magazine in 2008 . . .  great design is possible with DIY!

Les Toiles du Soleil: A Striped Haven

A nirvana of color, stripes and goodies is the way I would describe Les Toiles du Soleil (translated it means “the cloth of the sun”).  With over 150 years of textile manufacturing experience in the Catalan region of France, this shop is a jewel for cut yardage with generous 72-inch widths made on traditional looms as well as textile accessories to brighten your home.

In addition to the online shop, a brick and mortar shop was opened in NYC back in 2008 where the cut yardage can be purchased in addition to the accessories.  The best part is that the accessories are made in the store so you have the option to purchase ready made goods or customize them!  And, if you love the textiles for your exterior there is a Sunbrella offering of the great Les Toiles du Soleil textiles.

The small tray in Ceret Cerise is one of many textile covered acrylic trays.  Trays are available in small, medium and large, and all vary because the textile for each tray is cut from the bolt.  A small tray would be great for a guest’s bedside table, and the larger trays would be useful for many hostess needs, a colorful coffee service for one.

The Bonbon Plume Deck Chair is a traditional French Riviera style beech wood deck chair.  This chair can be reclined into four different positions, and any fabric choice can be removed for cleaning and changed as your decor evolves.

Pillows, bolsters and pillows.  The Colombe Sunbrella Bolster is one of many for the great outdoors.  Outdoor living space is as important as the interior, and Sunbrella - sun-stain-and water-resistant – woven textiles are perfect.  The range in Les Toiles du Soleil’s color palette makes outdoor lounging in style possible for all.

So if you get to Manhattan put Les Toiles du Soleil on your shopping list.  And, if not, then check them out online.  So many goodies to choose from . . . hand towels, placemats, coasters, bags, aprons, pillows, oven mits, etc.

In pursuit of new ways to use oilcloth – check out Sewing with Oilcloth by Kelly McCants and a plethora of online resources listed at The Oilcloth Expert - I found chalk cloth.  Now that chalk paint is the new grail of fun ways to use paint, chalk cloth is surely its counterpart in the textile world.  The chalkcloth charger/placemat is one of many creative uses of chalkcloth that I found on Modern June.

Scalloped Chalkcloth table runner

Deluxe Scribble and Splat Mat

Chalk and Oilcloth Pennant

Possibly my most favorite use of chalkcloth is the fun banner above.  So colorful with the oilcloth and useful with the chalkcloth!  And, would be great for a garden party, birthday party, housewarming or in a craft area.

Between the charger, table runner and splat mat, there seem to be so many uses for chalkcloth to be explored.  Modern June is a great shop for these items and chalkcloth yardage.  And, to make the most of your investment there are even instructions for caring for your chalk cloth.

Do you know how there is that one thing in your house that you just want to cover up every time someone comes into your home because you are embarrassed by it? For me that thing has been my dining room chandelier…or lack there of. And it was not exactly easy to cover (although I tried)! In my case, there was a ceiling fan in the dining room because the previous owners of our house had used the space as a bedroom. But I finally found a chandelier to suit the space and make me happy!

I found the chandelier on my trip to Newburyport. Come may, we’ll have been in our house for five years. Some people might wonder how as a designer I could live for five years with a ceiling fan instead of a chandelier in my formal dining room, and surprisingly I actually have a pretty good answer. I’m particular. Not only am I particular, but I’m also on a tight budget and consider myself at least a moderate environmentalist. I refuse to buy a piece of crap just to fill the space with the intention of throwing it out when I find the real right piece. I’d rather hold out and save my money to put towards the right piece.

Truth be told, I had actually finally broken down and gone to the fabulous Ramson House in Newport to design a shade chandelier just a few weeks earlier, but I hadn’t yet pulled the trigger and actually ordered it. I had designed a linen white shade with a navy banding. The price was very reasonable (it’s actually not that expensive to design what you want), but when I laid eyes on this linen shade chandelier, it was more versatile, only slightly more expensive, and I could take it home and avoid the six week lead time (not like after five years that makes a big difference!).

I still need to have the hubby put this new light on a dimmer, but overall I’m quite happy with it. I like to think that that room is now done, but the truth is that finally finding and installing a new light only means that I can now focus on finding the right fabric to re-upholster the chairs (which are essentially a scrapbook of my mother’s decorating over the years) and work on getting the furniture refinished and repaired. It will probably never be done, but at least I can cross one more thing off my 2012 To-Do List!

Antiques, Comina, Flukes & Finds & Friends, Home Stores, Newburyport, Red Bird Trading, Seaport Antiquities, Souffles, The Purple Onion, vintage, Wish Basket

Those of you who follow us on and know that last week we decided to take a road trip about one hour and forty-five minutes north of Newport to the seaside town of Newburyport just north of Boston. We just can’t help but be lured by coastal towns even though we live in one. This quaint town offers rows of brick buildings, cobblestone streets, wide open squares, and lots of great shopping for everything from antiques to clothing to trending housewares. My partners in crime were Pamela, Maaike (who you may remember for her Bulbs in a Crate Hostess Gift), and Kim (who taught us all how to style bookshelves).

Our first stop was at . It’s hard to describe exactly what this store has to offer as it is very eclectic, but the best description I can give is that it’s a mix of antiques and fabulous finds for all your home needs from furniture to entertaining to skincare. Antique Doors

Antique Fresco Ceiling and Chandelier

Divine Bedding

Perhaps what makes this shop so unique is its kitchen section. An amazing collection of gourmet pastas, sauces, dips, chocolates, and so much more…

including fresh hot bread and sandwiches.

Then we headed next door to Wish Basket’s sister store, . This store had me at the door with this outdoor display of antique windows. We headed inside to find another amazing collection of antiques mixed with new items as well as some lovely clothing. This store is highly reminiscent of Anthropologie but still has that small boutique feel because it isn’t a chain.

Does this linen nailhead table remind you of any previous posts?

And perhaps the piece de resistance at Red Bird Trading was this wooden vault that we were told was from an Italian church. We thought it would make an amazing party closet or perhaps a playhouse for the kids, but needless to say with a price tag of $18,000 and the fact that we didn’t bring a big enough car, we just had to leave it behind (that’s not to say we went home open handed).

Next up we hit Flukes & Finds & Friends, an antique store that with careful searching offered many treasures. Here we picked up a set of vintage opera binoculars and a great white pitcher that will be perfect for hydrangeas this summer. We left behind a lot of great finds too though including some great vintage cameras, wire baskets, and more.

We made several other stops including Seaport Antiquities where we found an amazing antique bistro set that’s still haunting us because we didn’t buy it along with a vintage ladder that would be perfect for a bookshelf. We also popped into Comina which is always a favorite and also has eight other locations in New England that are worth checking out. And in the non-home department, Lively Kids was a great kids clothing and toy shop featuring favorites like Tea Collection, Bla Bla Kids, Petunia Picklebottom, and many more fabulous brands.

We loved Souffles (and not just because I was obsessed with their sign), but they had fabulous coffee and biscotti and a great collection of kitchen gadgets and dishes. Their display of cafe au lait bowls in the window made me want to buy them all! It was the perfect place for that last jolt of caffeine we needed to make it through the afternoon and we picked up something that we’ll be using in a creative way for an upcoming birthday party (you’ll have to stay tuned). They also introduced Kim to her new favorite coffee drink, a Chai with a shot of espresso.

So what did we come home with? Well, I picked up this great wicker cake stand at Wish Basket that I thought was a steal. I can’t wait to serve up cheese and crackers on it this summer at polo.

And I finally found a shade chandelier for my dining room at Red Bird Trading that I hope to be able to show you installed very soon.

I believe more than one of us took this galvanized bucket home from Wish Basket. For $8, how could you not?

Speaking of galvanized, Kim also picked up this beautiful antique galvanized pitcher at Seaport Antiquities.

And she scored this fabulous wine barrel lazy susan at Wish Basket. It will be perfect for serving up a beautiful selection of cheeses (notice a theme?), and I know some adorable little mice that would look just perfect on it.

Pamela snatched up these fabulous vintage opera glasses and the adorable pagoda shaped magnetic board below.

There were a few other little bits and pieces we picked up along the way, and I’m sure that there could have been many more. There were so many things we loved about this day trip to Newburyport, but one of things we were most impressed with was the range of prices. Not only did every store have great products at all price ranges, but the prices on items we’d researched on the internet were less in these small boutiques than we could find on Etsy or Craigslist.

Without a doubt, if Newburyport is within driving distance from where you live, it’s worth the trip. And I have a feeling we could have spent a lot more time there. We didn’t even get a chance to check out the beautiful homes, the shoreline, or the restaurants. Although the quick bite we did grab at The Purple Onion was fabulous.

One last note: when you’re doing a daytrip or even a weekend like this, choose your shopping partners wisely. All four of us are passionate about home decor, but we also all have varying tastes (although they certainly overlap). While this trip was really fun because I’m good friends with all of these ladies, it was also wonderful that our styles varied enough that we could eye a one of a kind item and even if we all would have loved to have it, we knew who’s house it would work  best in and be thrilled for that person to have it. It made the trip all that much more enjoyable.

Etsy, fiestaware, Key West, Vintage Fiestaware

As a girl who loves colorful things, you can imagine my excitement to discover the dinnerware in our Key West rental was none other than Fiestaware.

While the set in this house was new, Fiestaware is highly collectible.  Established in the 1930′s, the company produced a range of pieces that are sought after by antique dealers and amateur collectors all over the world.  New pieces are sold at reasonable prices in department stores like Macy’s.  You will find them in vibrant colors that always look great mixed and matched.  Vintage Pieces are not too hard to come by.  Etsy and Ebay are great places to start.  Some colors and pieces are easier to find than others but vintage or new, I have always been a fan of the line.  It can easily be dressed up with linen napkins, a great table-cloth and a vase full of Lily’s or paired with bright Gerber Daisy’s, rattan chargers and a pitcher of margaritas.  Perfect for lunch time.

While cozy in front of the fire on a blog roll I stumbled upon this dining room on Chinoiserie Chic.  The red lacquer chairs with the navy and white seats caught my eye first.  Then I saw the four Ginger Jar giclee prints on the wall.  These prints made by The Pink Pagoda are unique and colorful.  Available in a wide range of colors – check out all of the options – but my favorite is the Hot Pink Ming vase!

Happy Chinese New Year!!!!
