bathroom renovation, Coastal Decor

When faced with a challenge, leave it to my mom to get creative and find a great solution.  Her guest bathroom had been on her home improvement to-do list for years. The bathroom was outfitted with a powder blue sink, toilet and tub.  Replacing them would be ideal but budget was a factor.  With a little paint and some cute fabric, she transformed the space into a cute and beachy guest bath.

Before

AfterNow the space feels fresh and updated.  I especially like the fabric she chose for the curtains and the finished woodwork around the mirror and light fixture.  I do hope she will replace the blue toilet one day but for now, we all feel a bit better about using the loo when we stay over.

Front Yard Makeover Inspiration

Front Yard Makeover, Garden Inspiration, Landscape Inspiration

This was our house when we bought it 5 1/2 years ago. Sadly not much about its facade has changed since we moved in despite my many, many ideas. Ideas typically cost many, many dollars, and as we live on a main road and have two little kids, we tend to spend most of our time in the back yard which is where we’ve put what little money we had to invest into the landscaping. But I’m starting to make a little bit of progress, and I’m ready to start drawing up some plans for the future of our front yard. The first thing we did when we moved in was to take that storm door off the front door. Our front door is (or was) beautiful and original to our now nearly 65 year old home. Unfortunately, it’s on its last legs and desperately needs to be replaced now. We’ve also cut the rhododendron on either corner of the house way down so that they are only about 6 feet instead of 12 feet high. And finally, or should I say FINALLY!!!! my husband has just pulled out all those rosa rugosa that lined the street. While I do like those flowers in general, these bushes had become unwieldy before we even bought the house and were not doing us any favors, but they are a you know what to get out with their stubborn and deep roots. I still need to remove the other two bushes in front of the windows and alongside the house, and will replace them with flowering perennials.

In place of the bushes, I would love to put in a stone wall as it would also reduce the noise of the cars that pass by, but that’s very pricey, particularly for the length we would need.

I’ve also considered putting in a hedge or a fence, but the combination of the two is rather appealing as well, particularly when placed atop a low stone wall! But I really like how bright and cheery the white picket fence looks here and how the hedge offers additional privacy.

Of course, when I see a fence like this with the roses climbing through it, there is nothing else I want more. A few months ago I was set on a low hedge, but after our pup got hit by a car on our street a few weeks ago (she’s ok now), I’m feeling like a fence it probably the best way to go, and if I could achieve this English cottage garden look I would be thrilled.

Back to the front door; we desperately need a new one, and hands down if I can get whatever I want, I will get a Dutch door. I just absolutely love them! And this one with the lattice style window panes would really give our house that cottage look I’m going for.

On either side of the front door, I’ll need square planters overflowing with flowering plants.

And a new coastal inspired door knocker!

Our brick steps are also falling apart and need to be re-pointed, but I would love to replace them with bluestone steps and a new pathway to match.

My husband prefers the brick steps with a bluestone tread, and seeing as we already have brick steps and would just have to have them repaired and updated to achieve this, there’s a good chance he’s going to win that one.

Lastly, it would be crime to leave our current boring mailbox out front if we were able to pull off any of the above makeover so I think I’d go with something like the Endeavor mailbox post from Walpole Woodworkers as a nod to nautical town.

Stay tuned to see what I actually manage to pull off!

lacquer, Monogrammed Accessories, monogramming, Personalized Gifts

There are few things I love more than a great lacquer tray. I’m partial to them in orange, although I really can’t resist the silver metallic either. It’s actually a travesty that I don’t already own one. But it looks like that it about to change for sure. West Elm has made their lacquer tray collection even more irresistible by now offering monogramming!

While I was really excited about the monogramming possibilities as I love a classic monogram, when I went to look into it further, it turns out you can have up to nine letters inscribed which means you can really have fun with this. A few options instead of a classic monogram would be a family’s last name (even my long one–Fernandez-would fit!), a first name if it were for someone use in a more casual space like to store perfumes or jewelry in the bedroom, or a fun message like “Cheers.” And at prices that range from $24 to $69 plus only $7 per monogram, you could also create a fun series of them for a sideboard, coffee table, or even as a way to organize a closet or drawers.

Oh, and just in case you thought these trays couldn’t get any better, the large rectangle (which does come in fewer color options) also fits West Elm’s butler tray base. Yes, that means that you can have an amazing, customized, and totally chic tray table for $165. Or you can stick to the small square tray with monogram for all of $31. Plus, something like this is perfect for the person who already has everything.

You can thank me later for just getting a huge hunk of your holiday gift-giving figured out!

A Few Simple, Chic Wedding Details

newport weddings, Wedding Flower Ideas, Wedding Ideas, wedding place cards

This past Saturday I attended the wedding of one of my oldest friends (and relatives if you count that my sister and his brother are now married). There was no doubt in my mind that it would be spectacular as they are a gorgeous couple with great style and it took place at the most beautiful yacht club (and spot) in Newport. I didn’t bring my big camera, but I snapped a few shots with my phone of the little details that I loved. The color palette was neutral creams and champagne colors with accents of red and navy. One of my favorite details was the place cards and menus. I loved how the flourish of the script went all the way to the edges of the envelopes for the table assignments and then at each table the menus featured the seating assignment of each guest.

The centerpieces were simple yet striking with a mix of five smaller arrangements in vases of varying heights, and the linen tablecloths were simply elegant. Unfortunately, that’s about all I’ve got to share, but hopefully once they get their pictures back from the photographer, they’ll let me share some of them with you. It was truly beautiful and she was a stunning bride. Oh, one more thing…

I don’t really like to post pictures of myself here, but I feel the need to share my skirt with you all. About a week ago, I came across a piece of fabric that I had picked up many, many, many years ago. It’s a beautiful orange silk taffeta, and I thought it would make a beautiful skirt for the wedding so I called my seamstress to see if she could make it happen in the few days leading up to the event. A few hems and snaps, and I got this gorgeous wrap skirt that I finished off with a brooch on the hip where it gathered. It’s just a great reminder that you don’t have to spend a fortune to have a beautiful custom piece whether it be for your wardrobe or your home…and it justifies me keeping the other bins of fabric I’ve got in my basement. At some point they will be perfect for something I need!

Furniture, Storage Ideas

Finding ways to maximize the use of your space while incorporating the items you’ve already got or can pick up for cheap isn’t always easy, but with a little creativity it is possible. I love the way these tables, benches, and desks were altered (most are cut in half) and painted the same color to be mounted on the wall in layers to create a unique shelving system. While this is clearly a kids space, I think it could work really well if everything were painted white or pink in a really feminine room also. This look could easily be achieved by thrift store and side-of-the-road finds (the best kind) for next to nothing. How have you used tables in unique ways?
