One of my number one rules of design is to always pick neutral colors in the kitchen and bath when it comes to things like appliances and fixtures, including tile which might just be the number one thing that can date a kitchen or bath. Stick to walls and accessories when trying to make a statement in these rooms! So what’s a girl to do when one of her favorite designers–Jonathan Adler– who is known for color pairs up with a great bath fixture company–Kohler– to offer bright colored sinks? Well, rules are meant to be bent…if not broken!

One of the nice things about this collection is that the Jonathan Adler for Kohler  offerings aren’t overwhelming. There are three bathroom sinks and three kitchen sinks available in each of the above colors. I could definitely see any of these colors being appropriate for different designs. The Piccadilly Yellow would brighten up a bath in a sunny cottage. The Greenwich Green would be great paired with a slate gray in a modern space. Palermo Blue would be perfect for an island getaway house. And then there is Annapolis Navy (I honestly can’t believe he didn’t name Newport Navy considering he went to college in Rhode Island-ahem!) which is as classic as black or white.

Yes, navy is CLASSIC. Therefore I don’t have to break my rule to have a piece of this amazing collaboration! A navy sink in an all white kitchen would be crisp and cool. It would work great in a kitchen or bath with bold stripes of red or orange or lime green. You could get funky and pair it with fuchsia or be cool and pair it with gray. But whether you are feeling preppy or modern or eclectic there are plenty of ways to work navy into your decor. I would choose navy over black any day of the week when it comes to anything from a dress to a car. And so while I don’t typically encourage people to veer from the norm when it comes to kitchen and bath fixtures, I’d say if you can do it, get one of these navy sinks. Now I just need to come up with the moolah to re-do my kitchen or bath!

With all the festivities of the Fourth of July, taking a nice long nap sounds like a fabulous idea (even though I know it’s never going to happen!). One of my favorite companies to look for a beautiful summer bed with coastal inspiration is Maine Cottage Furniture. This Dory Daybed is perfect for a guest room or porch to laze away a summer afternoon.

The Dory bed also comes as a bunk bed which is so fun for a beach house, especially if you’ve got a bunk room!

And then there is the High Tide Bed for the master bedroom. I can practically hear the sound of the waves crashing.

One of the best things about Maine Cottage Furniture is that you can customize it by choosing one of more than 45 colors for your piece. They also have lots of coordinating pieces to make your room complete.

Wishing you a lazy summer day!

Happy Red, White and Blue Entertaining!!!

cloth napkins, garland, July 4th Decor, nail polish

Can someone tell me where June went?  I am not sure how it happened but it’s the Fourth of July already.  The word of the day is BUSY and with all that I have on my plate, I know I won’t have time to pull off the perfectly planned, and decorated, Fourth of July party.  Instead of stressing out over what to buy and how to decorate, I found some simple red, white and blue ideas that can be thrown together last-minute and will have your friends thinking you have been planning the perfect party weeks in advance.

Paper garland and great paper straws can subtly set the tone.

Feeling a little country? Bandana’s for napkins, mason jars, and red and white ticking striped remnants make a statement.

If you have a stash of solid table clothes or blankets, a picnic or simple table scape can be pulled together easily.

If all else fails, you can always just paint your nails!  They will look great wrapped around a glass of Rosé.

Mason Jars, Nasturtium

Nasturtium.

Some people say, “stop and smell the roses.” I say, “stop and smell the Nasturtium”.  I have planted some in my vegetable garden this year to add some color.  Little did I know, they act as a natural pest control, keeping slugs, aphids and other predatory insects away from my prized crop.  The flower is also edible and makes a great addition to salads or garnish on grilled veggies.  If that isn’t enough to make you plant some, they are also incredibly fragrant.  I keep them in a mason jar on the window sill above my kitchen sink so I can take in their lovely scent and beautiful color.  With my hectic summer schedule, it’s the simple summer offerings, like fresh cut flowers, that help me slow down the pace.

As you know I am a fan of white interiors and white tablescapes with pops of color because you can reinvent the look by changing out the accessories.  On a table the white tablecloth is clearly an advantage when using your favorite patterned dish ware, seasonal flowers from your garden, and holiday theme accessories; a white tablecloth is a clean canvas for designing a beautiful table.  But to be fair to the color enthusiasts, a colorful tablecloth is eye catching.  On the hunt for great Summer entertaining table ideas I found quite a few colorful and graphic tablecloths that made me rethink white tablecloths.  Do you agree?!

we always love navy and white . . .

clearly tangerine is a current favorite . . .

For those of us that aren’t culinary masters, a gorgeous tablescape is an opportunity to put our stamp on our soirée.  From striped to Suzani patterns to tangerine or navy palettes, be sure to have a couple amazing tablecloths in your party closet for occasions that you want to set a simple, yet colorful table.  Bon appétit!
