Infinity Pools

Wow, we had a really busy weekend with baby showers, birthday parties and the house tour! Needless to say we’re a bit wiped and dreaming of being somewhere like this today instead of back to the grind. In my next house, I’m definitely going to put a space (and view) like this on my must-have list.

Newport Life Home & Lifestyle Magazine 2012Last fall I had the pleasure of collaborating with my good friends Kelli Rugg of KPR Interiors and photographer Maaike Bernstrom on a very cool design project that Kelli had just completed to be featured in the new 2012 issue of Newport Home & Lifestyles magazine. Kelli designed, Maaike photographed, and I wrote the story “From Ship to Shore”. The home is named after the yacht Columbia and sits just a stone’s throw away from where the actual boat is moored in Newport Harbor. Be sure to check out the story to read about some of the history of the home as well as the background on the new design. And below you can enjoy even more photos of this custom home re-designed to have the feel of a classic yacht interior.

Apartment Therapy, house tour, nook, NYC, Small Cool Contest 2012

So the world is a small place when you’re personally invested in two Apartment Therapy contests in one year.  First, it was for Chateau & Bungalow in the 2012 Homies, and now it is for Bennett’s (my cousin’s step-daughter) 390 sq.ft. apartment in NYC entered into the Small Cool 2012 Contest.  And here’s the best part, not only does Bennett make living in 390 sq. ft. très chic, but she is sharing the space with her roommate Ryan!

Check out Bennett & Ryan’s Lovely Light apartment:

Since this apartment is the size of my current suburban bedroom – my small apartment days in NYC are happily a distant memory – I applaud Bennett & Ryan for not giving up on style due to a lack of space.  Each room is well appointed, and I’d gladly sleep in either of those bedrooms.  And, curious to see all of the storage solutions.  Are those closets organizational treasures for all of us with space issues?!

***A little inside scoop:  The rug and pillows in Bennett’s room are from Vanderhurd, the low back tub-type chairs in the Living Room are from Ikea (kids chair – perfect for teeny tiny apartment), and the pig on the mantle is from Cooper Hewitt.***

As always, if you love what you see, then I encourage you to vote for Bennett & Ryan.  The first round of voting ends on April 30, with the finalists to be voted on May 1-2.  To vote at Apartment Therapy you need to be registered to vote on contests, so take a moment to complete this step so you can vote for all of your favorite Small Cool spaces.  Enjoy!

While on a recent pinning frenzy on looking for fun entertaining ideas, I stumbled upon Society Social.  If you are like me, then you probably don’t have enough space to comfortably seat everyone at your table – one, two or even three leaves in a dining table often requires more chairs than I own – so these Fifi folding chairs would be a perfect solution.  Not only are these available in 11 high-gloss water-based, eco-friendly paint colors, the chairs are handcrafted of plantation wood, sustainable rattan and natural cane.  So eco-friendly, space saving and a color for every decor.

In addition to great chairs, there is a selection of tables, bar carts, pillows, vintage goods, hostess attire and more; Society Social is a destination for entertainment goods.  Enjoy! Here are a couple more items on my entertainment wish list.

Torn between desiring a bar cart or needing the expandable table above . . . fun hostess dilemmas to ponder!

As you know Etsy is filled with a plethora of wonderful hand-made goodies, and this week we wanted to share a local favorite:  Willywaw.  Ashley Van Etten’s studio is over the bridge from Newport, RI in Narragansett and it is an inspiring space to visit as well as shop.  The Argonauta pillow above is one of many hand screen printed pillow covers that are now available on-line in addition to tea towels, totes, notecards and more.

Big Bucket Tote

Since all of the screen printing is done by hand at the studio, Willywaw is able to customize their designs to suit your decor.  A friend’s porch was in need of navy and white pillows to complete the design, and look what Ashley created!  I think the seaweed pillow is my favorite, but gather Sarah wants the whale pillow.

In addition to Willywaw’s Etsy shop, there are Open Studio days on the first Sunday of every month as well as a market stall on Saturday’s at the Winter Coastal Growers Farmers Market.  Willywaw – named after the ferocious arctic winds that sweep down coastal mountains and blow onto the ocean – is sure to inspire all to bring a touch of inspired nature into your decor.

“We’ve got everything we need right here, and everything we need is enough.”
― Jack Johnson

This year I started working part-time, for my husband’s company.  The first thing I had to do was find them a new office space.  After a bit of hunting I hit the jackpot!  A newly remodeled, open space, complete with exposed brick walls and incredible harbor views! Finding the space took time but was really fun.  Trying to decorate the space to accommodate the needs of five individuals was a bit more challenging.  Thankfully I have some very talented friends, including C&B’s Sarah Fernandez.  After taking a look at the space she helped me come up with some ideas.  I took those ideas and presented them to the bosses who also had creative solutions.  Our work is all about collaboration and I think in this case, the outcome is pretty darn good.

BEFORE:

Wanting to keep an open feel and not have to be stuck in a cubical, we found this screen in the basement of my husband’s sail loft.  Our wood worker, Cody Harple, designed the feet so it would have a free-standing feel to it.

AFTER:

Using reclaimed materials was a must for our office.  We are very conscious about minimizing the use of non-essential materials and maximizing the use of old materials by re-purposing them.  This desk was created out of reclaimed wood from the Coronet.  Cody had created another version of this and we HAD to have one!  Thankfully he had some left over pieces and was able to design a desk that fits our needs.  We can easily have two people working here at the same time.

We wanted to have a large recycle bin in the office and this is what we came up with!  Thankfully pallets are very easy to come by and FREE!  The liners are recycled sail cloth from my husband’s sail loft.  They are easy to remove and have rope drawstring handles so we can easily tote the recyclables out of the office.

The conference area presented a greater challenge.  We couldn’t go up to the ceiling and we didn’t want to bolt anything to the wall or floor. Cody came up with this design that can be removed and reinstalled if we ever move, though I hope we never will!  The walls are made of recycled sails and reclaimed wood and are attached by clamping to the structural beams already in place.  The pocket doors slide easily in and out of the frame to create a private room where we can meet with our collaborators (or stash some interns). The conference table is made from wood and carbon fiber.  A homemade cast off from a friend’s former business that used to be my dining room table.

For seating, we ordered the Domino Chair from Steelcase.  They are really comfortable and we love that they can be completely recycled if need be.  It is wonderful to be in a space that is not only functional but unique and fun!  The fine detail work and design by Cody Harple makes each corner of the office a beautiful place to work.  My hope is that after viewing this post, you will challenge yourselves to re-think the norm when it comes to design. We are not all crafty or born with good design sense but we can all be creative.  When our group worked together by putting all kinds of ideas on the table, we ended up with solutions that make every day in the office a good one!

A very special thanks to Miranda Harple for the fine photography.

The warm weather we have been enjoying is getting me excited about my patio project!  This year I plan to remake the cushions for my outdoor furniture; after reading Pamela’s post about decorative pillows, I am going to add some to my outdoor furniture as well!  I have picked out this simple Sunbrella fabric and now I need to find some great throw pillows.  The problem is, there are so many great ones out there.

Nautical or vintage?  Preppy or funky? I Love this one from Etsy.  It looks like a vintage scarf.

What ever I decided I know I want to mix prints and add some pops of color.  Who knows, Maybe my tomato plants won’t be the only pop of red out there this summer.

Neighborhoods of Newport House Tour 2012

2012 Neightborhoods of Newport House Tour, Chepstow, Gray Craig, Gray Craig Gatehouse, Newport House Tour, Newport Mansions, Open Houses, Starboard House

This coming weekend is one of my favorite weekend’s in Newport– the biannual Neighborhoods of Newport House Tour will take place! It’s one day when some of the city’s most beautiful homes are open to the public to benefit St. Michael’s Country Day School. Perhaps you remember the 2010 house tour which featured many gems including “Seaweed” where Martha Stewart was just spotted last weekend at a dinner party commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Titanic. This year’s House Tour includes , the Middletown estate overlooking the beautiful Sachuest Beach that was owned by actor Nicholas Cage until recently when he sold it for only half as much as he purchased it for a few years ago.

In addition to Gray Craig, the Gray Craig Gatehouse is also on the house tour this year. It is like a slice of the British countryside nestled into my little corner of the woods. While I’ve long admired Gray Craig, it is the gatehouse that I’ve really always wished I could get my hands on!

Starboard House was designed by the famous George Champlin Mason, Sr. and is situated near Newport’s famed Cliff Walk. A 10-bedroom, 7+ bath single family home with an incredible marble checkerboard foyer and lovely wraparound terraces, it certainly leaves little to be desired.

Just up the road from Starboard House is Chepstow, another George Champlin Mason, Sr. designed home that is currently owned by the Preservation Society of Newport County. This Italianate villa was once owned by Aletta Morris McBean and contains furniture and art collections from the McBean family dating back to the 1600s.

To round out the tour, this new construction shingle-style home built by well-known Newport builder Mark Horan is also on the tour. The centuries old craftsmanship that can be seen in the first four homes is not lost on many of the new homes that are built in Newport as is evidenced here.

The 2012 Neighborhoods of Newport House Tour will take place on Sunday, April 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $35 when purchased in advance (by Friday) and $40 thereafter. A boxed lunch is available when ordered in advance. And from experience I can promise you that it will take nearly the full amount of time to complete the tour allowing for a lunch break (although this year the homes are a bit closer together). Also, be sure to wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off as guests are required to remove their shoes prior to entering any of the homes.

Hope to see you there!

The Green Monster

Today marks 100 years of Fenway Park. Growing up in Massachusetts, Fenway has played a big roll in my life.  I will always remember the trips to watch the Sox play with my dad and brothers, first dates with certain nameless boyfriends, and then there was my best friends cat, “Fenway” ( they also had a cat named Wrigley, talk about baseball fans!).  To pay tribute to this milestone I would like to dedicate today’s post to The Green Monster.  Here are a few green items that I feel are as classic as the old ball park.

Happy Birthday Fenway!

Couldn’t resist . . . the Join cutlery place setting designed by Konstantin Slawinski is beautiful for any Spring or Summer tablescape!

If you love these as much as I do, then add them to your party closet.   Found a great tutorial on the Ding3000 website in case joining them isn’t as easy as it looks.
