After exploring the world of bookshelf design, it seemed that styling them should be next.  If you are like me, then you have numerous books from art to fiction to cooking.  And, maybe you are organized enough to group them by category.  Or carefully utilize your bookends, knickknacks, artwork, and more for a beautiful display.

But does your collection afford you the option to organize by color?  Color changes any scape and bookshelves aren’t immune.  On Jays World At Etsy there is a plethora of colored spine books grouped for styling preferences.  Imagine the grouping of white books (above) paired with stacks of red, orange, turquoise, purple and more on your bookshelf.

If this is low on your “to do” list, then perhaps the bookshelves below will tempt you to reconsider.

And if your bookshelf is perfect, but you love the idea of adding blocks of color, then create an side table with stacks of your favorite colors.

Etsy, fiestaware, Key West, Vintage Fiestaware

As a girl who loves colorful things, you can imagine my excitement to discover the dinnerware in our Key West rental was none other than Fiestaware.

While the set in this house was new, Fiestaware is highly collectible.  Established in the 1930′s, the company produced a range of pieces that are sought after by antique dealers and amateur collectors all over the world.  New pieces are sold at reasonable prices in department stores like Macy’s.  You will find them in vibrant colors that always look great mixed and matched.  Vintage Pieces are not too hard to come by.  Etsy and Ebay are great places to start.  Some colors and pieces are easier to find than others but vintage or new, I have always been a fan of the line.  It can easily be dressed up with linen napkins, a great table-cloth and a vase full of Lily’s or paired with bright Gerber Daisy’s, rattan chargers and a pitcher of margaritas.  Perfect for lunch time.

Displaying Family Photos, Displaying Kids Art, diy, Gallery Walls

Come May, we will have lived in our house for five years, but somehow there are still loads of projects that have not yet been completed. It is the result of some sort of combination involving having two small children, little money, and me not being able to find exactly what I want, well at least not at a reasonable cost. But in 2012, I (well my hubby has to play along) have committed to finishing our house! There may be a lot of projects, but they aren’t all huge and so we’ll start with the small stuff. First up, the tiny downstairs hallway that connects my kitchen, bathroom, living room, and basement. There wasn’t really anything wrong with this space until we had a leak from the bathtub upstairs, and the ceiling and wall had to be repaired which meant they needed to be painted and we didn’t have any more of the original paint color.

Here’s a peak at what it looked like before. Well technically the light fixture is also brand new and recently replaced the one that came with the house when it was built in 1948. I was shocked and pleased to find this bubble glass hanging pendant at Home Depot and for under $70 no less. While their products are fine for quality I typically find them to be very run of the mill so I couldn’t believe my eyes when there were dozens of interesting pendants to choose from.

We’ve always had photos hanging in this space, but there were only three large ones. We’ve also long discussed creating a gallery wall, but I didn’t want it to take up a huge wall. One of my most favorite things in people’s homes it to look at all of their photos and especially when they span generations. I decided this was the perfect small space to create the gallery walls because everyone passes through this hallway when they come to our home and it would still allow for the house to feel uncluttered (at least on the walls) because it wasn’t covering a huge space.

The next step was to paint. I decided that I really wanted to photos to be the focal point of the space and so I decided to paint it white. Plus, painting it white really brightened up this small space. Before heading to my local paint store to agonize over which white would be the right white I checked the basement to see what white paint I already had. And can you believe I actually had a color that was just called “white.” It wasn’t “snow white” or “super white” or “white lily.” I went with it.

Next up were the frames and what went in them. I decided I wanted to keep things pretty simple and clean, but I also wanted to be easy to add more frames as we have more photos and artwork to add. So I decided to go with a combination of black, white, and silver frames. The contents of the frames would be a mix of photos and artwork from our kids and others. While it was important for me to get this done. It is not finished and never will be as I expect that it will forever evolve as we add more photographs and found objects. I set it up with blank spaces to fill in rather than centering everything that I had right now. One of the most important things I did (although I have to give credit to Pamela who put up with me through it) is to lay each grouping of frames out on the floor before hanging them. That way I could see which frames sat right together and which photos and artwork worked best together. That is the step that should most definitely not be skipped. And I’m quite happy with how it all turned out…so far.

So what else is on the list for projects to get done this year:

1. Paint and reorganize the mudroom.

2. Replace front door and front steps.

3. Dig up most of the front yard and re-landscape.

4. Renovate downstairs bathroom from floor to ceiling.

5. Replace original light fixtures in front hall and upstairs hall.

6. Paint staircase and replace railing.

7. New chandelier for dining room.

8. Refinish and reupholster dining room furniture.

9. Hang curtains, get new rug, and replace lamps in master bedroom.

9. Hang curtains, paint, and reupholster furniture in my daughter’s room

10. Put the finishing touches on my son’s room.

11. Tile and replace surround of fireplace.

Of course there are the other really important things that need to be done like replacing the roof and adding insulation to the house. Those sadly might have to get moved to the top of the list and then we’ll see what’s left over to try to accomplish the other things on it. But hopefully, having a visual list (and exposing it to the world) will help motivate us to get it all done.

Remember Amy’s picture of the chunky winter white throw?  Or Sarah’s find of the chunky braided rugs?  Well they must have been channeling Flor’s most recent design feat, Sweater Weather rug tiles!  These chunky, cozy rug tiles are in the familiar cabled sweater pattern and available in five colors to suit any decor.

Sweater Weather tiles are another addition to one of my favorite modern design concepts, rug tiles.  Flor launched in the Spring of 2003 with a booth at the New York Gift Show shortly after where I saw them for the first time and fell in love.  Not only can you choose the number of tiles to create your perfect sized rug, you can choose pattern, textures and color to create art on your floor.

Just Plain Folk tiles

Sophistikat tiles

Custom cut tile pattern

And, if you are in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston or Atlanta then check out the Flor brick & mortar shops.  They are colorful, interactive and quite inspiring.

German silver, hand-etched, hand-etched side table, hand-etched silver armoire, Viva Terra

I love mirrored and silver objets, so when I saw this side table at Viva Terra it caught my eye.  It is faced with hand-etched sheets of German silver, which gives it shine and texture.  It is also a compact piece (18″L x 14″D x 28″H) with three drawers which provides storage and takes up minimal space for its impact.

And, if you love the hand-etched silver but would like a larger piece, then check out the armoire.  Which one do you need?!

There are few things that get me more excited than a fabulous in-home bar (I’m not sure what that says about me other than that I love a good cocktail), except for maybe a fabulous pantry (I’m obsessed with them!), so when I laid my eyes on this one I quickly fell head over heels for it. Dozens of glasses perfectly lined up and housed in red lacquer cabinets is just divine. Our good friend Kelli Rugg of KPR Interiors designed this stunning bar at one of the still private mansions of Newport.

There are so many things that are wonderful about this space, but besides the color itself I particularly love that Kelli kept the back splash the same color as the cabinets and in the same high gloss. Adding another color or texture would have distracted the eye, but instead the room just encompasses you in red all the way to the ceiling. The bar is the perfect place to choose a bold yet warm color and just because a space is on the smaller side doesn’t mean it should be neglected. In fact it’s the perfect spot to make a statement.

Belgian Linen, Besame Mucho, Butter London, Diptyque, Dr. Hauschka, Key West, Marvis, Petronia Street, Tocca

Chateau and Bungalow’s dear friend and contributor, Maaike Bernstrom suggested that while I was in Key West,  I pay a visit to one of her favorite shops.  There, tucked away on Petronia Street, I found it, Besame Mucho.  I knew Maaike had great taste so I was prepared to walk into a great boutique.  What I found was a shop that is as close to as a spa for my senses as it gets.

Owner Meredith Bollong has been filling her shop with items that inspire her for 13 years and it is obvious that this is no touristy T-shirt shop.  From simple Linen shift dresses to a fully stocked apothecary, Besame Mucho is layered with texture.  Tocca and Diptyque candles, Dr. Hauschka Skin Care, jewelery, teas and treasures are all set in a neutral color palate that wraps itself around each product like a blanket (or a Belgian Linen comforter in this case).

For 3 days I lingered around this beautifully merchandised shop and I still think I overlooked a few things.  I did make it home with a whimsical bicycle horn, Butter London nail polish and my favorite, Marvis Toothpaste.  I would say that combination says it all.

Brighten Your World with a Spot of Yellow

There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot, but there are others who, thanks to their art and their intelligence, transform a yellow spot into the sun.

-PABLO PICASSO

While walking through The Point area of town, I noticed this incredible door.  The mustard yellow against the brick red clapboard decorated with a pineapple wreath  completely caught my attention.  It also got me thinking about the recent compliments I have been receiving on my mustard yellow shoes.  These worn in flats have made an appearance in my wardrobe and it seems I am not the only one who is enjoying and being influenced by yellow.

I hopped over to one of my favorite blogs, Habitually Chic, and found that they were also inspired by yellow.  Not only did I find these great stools but a shot of The Great Gatsby, a movie I had watched just days before and one that happens to be filmed in our very own Newport.

The next thing I know, I find this selection of yellow items from Crate and Barrel on my friend’s page.

Is it all just coincidence or are we just dreaming about Spring a little early this year?

Dreamy Whites: Vintage French Inspiration

Dreamy Whites, french farmhouse living, grain sack pillow slips, Milk Bottle Caddy, vintage french bistro chairs

Inspired by Amy’s winter white post and my love of all things french, I recently found a new shop that encompasses both.  Dreamy Whites is french farmhouse inspired and all items are one-of-kind.  There are a wide variety of hand sewn pillows, totes, table runners, and aprons made from European linens and grain sacks. Dreamy Whites also offers a variety of unique french antiques and lavender products.

My current favorite item is a pair of Vintage French Bistro Chairs (above).  If you love them too, then shop quickly because there are quite a few items that I like but have been “sold”.  If you can’t imagine them in your home, then not to worry here is a beautiful shot of them nestled in the corner of a living room.

Even if you don’t need chairs, you might need grain sack pillow slips.

Or lavender bundles or sachets for a wonderful night of rest.

Or a little vintage charm for your table.

Belles idées pour une bonne vie.
